NNEC - 5000 Pounds Lighter in 30 Days by Peter Hanlon
The web is home to list upon list of tips and advice on how to shrink your carbon footprint. They’re wonderful, but how many times can you read about the benefits of bringing reusable shopping bags to the grocery store before your eyes begin to glaze over?
Thankfully, the good folks at Renewable Energy Long Island (RELI) are offering a full-day workshop for Long Islanders who want to get away from their computer monitors and learn, live and in person, a few of the more advanced carbon footprint-shrinking strategies. The July 12th Long Island Climate Action Network volunteer tr ... Read Full Article»

Where do we begin?
Let’s start with one of Fuller’s lesser-known but most ambitions ideas: interconnecting the world through an electrical energy grid, allowing renewable resources in distant locations to supply the energy needs of populations around the world. "Grid," "interconnection," "renewable" – all key words for NNEC. Fuller’s vision hasn’t been realized yet, and it’s debatable whether that’s a good thing. A worldwide, centralized grid may not be ideal – you know, the potential for widespread blackouts and all – compar ... Read Full Article»

Every once in a while we hear arguments against the aesthetics of renewable energy generation. Wind farms, in particular, tend to be the targets, be they in coastal waters or Midwestern plains. Well, those who employ that line of reasoning might want to familiarize themselves with the aesthetics of mountaintop removal mining for coal in the Appalachian Mountains. Maybe it’s us, but the latter seems a little more…aesthetically challenged.
Dr. John Todd, a pioneer of ecological design and engineering, is well aware of the impacts of mountaintop removal mining on Appalachia: one and a half million ... Read Full Article»
